The Pentagon now has its own versions of ChatGPT and Grok
Modern computer workspace

The Pentagon has made OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil and xAI’s Grok for Government versions available to 3 million civilian and military personnel, with the aim of providing AI tools tailored to “warfighter needs.” The tools were added to the centralized and secure GenAI.mil portal established last year. The portal aims to prevent sensitive government data from being routed through ordinary consumer channels and to provide access to commercial AI models. The military versions are exempt from data-collection practices that are difficult to avoid in consumer technologies.

According to the Department of Defense, GenAI.mil has brought more than 1.7 million of its 3 million personnel into the system. ChatGPT Mil will offer chats, files, projects and custom GPTs, supporting routine, document-heavy and unclassified work such as administrative tasks, logistics, planning and policy.

The department described Grok’s military use in broader terms. Starshield AI’s Grok for Government service is expected to increase productivity, ensure continuity of information and make collaboration more secure and efficient. The tool will be used for a range of tasks, from market research analysis for procurement teams to supply chain management for logistics personnel.

The new agreements also drew attention to the absence of Anthropic’s Claude model. Anthropic was declared a supply-chain risk by the Trump administration after refusing to allow the Pentagon unlimited use of its AI tools and requesting safety measures, and it challenged the decision in court. The Pentagon also reached agreements with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia and Reflection AI.

Why it matters

This step moves AI use beyond individual experiments into a centralized and secure institutional framework accessible to millions of personnel. Keeping sensitive data away from consumer channels makes the balance between data management and efficiency more critical within the organization, particularly for document-heavy, unclassified work. The fact that the tools will be used for tasks ranging from administrative work to logistics and planning shows that AI is being positioned not merely as technical support but as part of daily workflows. However, Anthropic’s exclusion because of its request for safety measures leaves open the question of how usage limits and security conditions will be determined for such systems. The inclusion of more than 1.7 million personnel in GenAI.mil also makes this governance issue tangible for a broad user base.

Background

ChatGPT is not a new name in the FikirPilot archive: over the past 90 days, we have published 15 news stories mentioning it; the latest is dated September 6, 2026.

Term: supply chain

A supply chain is the entirety of the production and transportation links through which a product passes from raw materials to the end user.
