OpenAI takes on Microsoft by launching a product that closely resembles an office suite for ChatGPT

OpenAI announced new ChatGPT features that bring it closer to its rival in business software while maintaining its close partnership with Microsoft. The features, announced on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at the DevDay conference in San Francisco, were designed for office workers.

  • Space was introduced as a workspace where employees can collaborate with ChatGPT and OpenAI’s new AI agent personas, Dots, which can perform tasks on users’ behalf. Users can give pages specific instructions, such as checking a team channel and adding what they find to the page; pages and files are kept together within Space.
  • Pages was described as a document and word-processing tool developed for people and agents to work together. According to OpenAI, users can write, conduct research, create charts, generate images, and visualize information there. The tool is a response to Google Docs and Microsoft Word.
  • OpenAI also announced a collaborative slides feature as a counterpart to PowerPoint. Users will be able to create slides by talking within ChatGPT; employees and agents will then be able to edit the slides together and leave comments. The feature is not yet available and will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

As OpenAI enters Microsoft’s territory, companies such as Microsoft and Salesforce are also trying to catch up with OpenAI. The two companies have released numerous AI products over the past year to keep pace with the changing software industry.

Why it matters

This move reflects an effort to transform the AI assistant from a tool that answers individual questions into a layer that combines writing, research, visualization, and presentation preparation within the same workflow. The development therefore concerns not only individual users but also how teams produce documents, assign tasks, and collaborate on content. As OpenAI continues its partnership with Microsoft, its move into the functional territory of Microsoft’s core office software makes the competitive dimension of the relationship between the two companies more visible; Salesforce’s growing alignment with OpenAI also shows that this transformation is taking place within a broader industry rivalry. However, the extent to which these tools will become embedded in existing enterprise workflows, and how the collaborative slides feature that has yet to launch will round out the user experience, remain open questions.

Term: agent

An AI agent is software that calls tools and carries out multi-step tasks to achieve a goal, rather than producing a single response.
