Meta’s AI app Muse outperformed ChatGPT’s performance during the first 12 days of its mobile launch, according to Apptopia data. The comparison covers only the US and Canadian markets.
For a more accurate comparison, Apptopia examined the iOS data for both apps in these countries and reported that Muse reached 1.8 million downloads, while ChatGPT reached 1.3 million. Muse’s total installations worldwide also reached 2.8 million in the first 12 days.
ChatGPT was launched globally on mobile and only on iOS, while Muse was released on both the App Store and Google Play in the US and Canada. Muse rose from 2nd to 1st place in the US App Store rankings after its launch, surpassing ChatGPT in the process. Appfigures had previously announced that Muse had exceeded 1 million downloads.
According to Apptopia’s estimates of daily active users, 642,000 people used Muse every day in the US, compared with 231,000 for ChatGPT during the same period. In the iOS-only comparison, Muse also reached 359,000 daily active users, ranking above ChatGPT’s level during the same period.
It was noted that the figures are third-party estimates, as Apptopia does not have direct access to Meta’s data. According to the data, over 95% of Muse users are Facebook users, while 63% are Instagram users. The app can connect to Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Meta has not yet shared publicly available data on Muse’s early usage.
Why it matters
This picture shows that competition among mobile AI applications is shaped not only by download numbers, but also by daily usage and existing platform habits. Muse’s strong overlap with Facebook and Instagram users suggests that the app can gain users through Meta’s existing ecosystem; this is particularly significant for people who already use these platforms. However, because the data is based on third-party estimates, the actual usage levels of the two applications cannot be directly verified. The scope being limited to the US and Canada, along with differences in operating systems and app store access, also makes it difficult to generalize the results to the entire mobile market. Meta’s failure to share its own usage data also leaves open the question of how Muse’s early performance has been received in different markets and over a longer period.
