Marvel star shares the real reason behind her retirement from acting
Forest road

Marvel star Evangeline Lilly has shared the real reason behind her departure from acting. She explained her decision to the Christian Broadcasting Network. The 47-year-old actress, known for the series Lost, which aired on ABC for 6 seasons between 2004 and 2010, had announced her retirement in 2024, a decision that came one year after she took on the role of Hope van Dyne/Wasp in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which grossed 476 million dollars worldwide.

Lilly said she has always hated being famous and never hid it, adding that she preferred a quieter life. Fame, in her view, was the price of the fortune earned through acting. Admitting that adjusting to retirement took a long time, the actress said, “It’s actually been 6 years,” and stated that she had achieved the goals she set for herself at the age of 26.

Lilly, who acknowledged that, in addition to giving up power and influence, losing her earning potential also frightened her, emphasized that the decision was made with “great faith.” She studied political science and international relations. Lilly, who considered becoming a missionary or a humanitarian worker, also weighed the idea of becoming a diplomat and noted that she did humanitarian work in Rwanda for 22 years. She now wants to tell her own stories rather than be in front of the camera.

Why it matters

Lilly’s decision offers a rare example showing that career endings cannot always be explained by failure or scandal, since it was announced just one year after she starred in a Marvel film that grossed 476 million dollars. By defining fame as the price of the fortune she earned and walking away without resigning herself to it, she demonstrates that money and influence are not decisive for every actor in the entertainment industry. The decision also leaves uncertain the future of the Wasp character in the franchise and whether the actress will return. Her education in political science and international relations, together with a humanitarian background spanning 22 years in Rwanda, shows that acting was not an identity for her but a means toward the goals she set at the age of 26. In contrast, what the stories she now says she wants to tell are, and by what means she will share them, remain undefined.
