Building a Simple Internet Radio
Electronic circuit and display

To build a simple internet radio, CodersCafeTech developed a plain desktop radio that streams over the internet instead of AM/FM. Here is the hardware list.

An ESP32-S3 development board with built-in WiFi (2.4 GHz antenna) forms the core component, while a 1.3-inch OLED display connected via I2C provides control together with a rotary encoder. Audio output is handled by a MAX98357 I2S audio amplifier, and the device includes a 3 W speaker used for listening to the sound at its output.

Once programmed, running the device requires only the WiFi network name and password, along with the URL of the internet radio station to be listened to. That is all that is needed for setup.

Why it matters

This project shows that an approach that frees radio listening from AM/FM receiver hardware and moves broadcasting to the internet can be realized with just a few basic components. Unlike conventional radios that depend on terrestrial transmitters, the device’s station pool is determined by sources broadcasting on the internet; this removes listening from being limited by geographic coverage. The primary audience is hobby electronics enthusiasts who work on ESP32-based DIY projects; the fact that setup is completed with only network credentials and a station address lowers the barrier to trying out such devices. The report, however, does not explain how to carry out the programming required for the device to work or where to obtain the software. How to change the station address later, whether multiple stations are supported, and the total cost of the components remain open questions.
