Why do engine failures occur so frequently in Range Rover vehicles? Despite the brand’s prestige, the chronic problems seen in some engines affect various components, from the timing chain to the lubrication system and cooling parts. The most prominent problems are as follows:
- In 2.0-liter Ingenium diesel engines, particularly in the Evoque and Velar models, the timing chain can loosen and stretch over time. This condition manifests itself with various symptoms. The malfunction warning light comes on. Power loss occurs. A rattling noise is heard. Jaguar Land Rover launched a free repair program in South Korea in late 2024 for these engines from specific production periods. The situation in Turkey, however, depends on a chassis number check. – Crankshaft and bearing failures occurring in the 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 diesels can lead to the engine seizing and severe damage. Lubrication performance and maintenance history prove decisive. – In the early production periods of the 5.0 V8 gasoline models, the chain tensioners and guides can cause problems. The water pump and plastic cooling fittings can also fail. Overheating can turn into a hefty bill extending all the way to the cylinder head.
The problem is not limited to older body styles. Some vehicles from 2020-2023, along with 2024 model year Velars, were recalled due to an incompletely machined oil passage in the six-cylinder gasoline engines. The defect led to oil leaks and a risk of fire. The recall also made its way into the documents of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Turbo systems require specialized expertise to repair. Complex emission systems and hybrid technologies also demand expertise. Because the engine must be removed from the vehicle for certain parts, labor costs for these repairs rise. In What Car?’s 2025 reliability survey, Land Rover ranked 26th among 30 brands.
