Developing a Game Boy Emulator Without an Interface
Microchip and smartphone

[Artificial-Age] has developed an unusual emulator that runs Game Boy games on ESP32-S3. The device has no screen or physical buttons; users connect to the WiFi access point created by ESP32 and control the games with a keyboard or touchscreen while receiving video and audio through a web browser. ROMs can also be uploaded to ESP32’s flash memory through the web interface.

Why it matters

This design transforms the emulator from a standalone gaming device into a software interface accessed over a network. As a result, the browser of the device accessing the connection created by ESP32-S3, rather than a dedicated screen and buttons, becomes the center of the user experience. The ability to transfer ROMs to flash memory through the web interface also allows game content to be changed without requiring physical contact with the device. The project demonstrates that a small microcontroller can combine emulation with video, audio, controls and content management within a web-based structure. However, how consistently keyboard- and touchscreen-based operation will work across different browser environments remains a key unresolved issue.
