A Cheap and Easy Control Screen for Home Assistant
Wall-mounted smart home screen

Max Gramser has developed a customizable touchscreen control panel for Home Assistant systems. The ESP32-based project runs on both the Cheap Yellow Display, which features an ILI9341 screen and an XPT2046 resistive touchscreen, and the Guition ESP32-S3-4848S040, which combines an ST7701S RGB screen with a capacitive GT911 touchscreen. Users only need to install the software on a compatible device. The clean and flexible interface can display weather, time, and date widgets. Buttons for operating lights and home appliances can also be added, while compatible robot vacuums can be managed. This makes it possible to create dedicated, always-ready wall-mounted controls for Home Assistant functions.

Why it matters

The wall-mounted, always-ready design gives households using Home Assistant a central point for accessing essential automation controls. The project’s compatibility with two different ESP32-based displays allows users with resistive or capacitive touchscreen hardware to choose according to their existing devices. Requiring only the installation of software for use makes setup more accessible by reducing the need to develop a separate custom control system. Bringing weather and time information together with controls for lights, home appliances, and compatible robot vacuums in the same interface makes the screen more than just a remote control. However, the range of supported Home Assistant devices, the customization process, and the differences between the two hardware options in use remain unclear.
