China’s brain chip move: Approval granted for devices rivaling Musk
Neural interface device and laboratory

Chinese officials have launched a wide-ranging initiative to develop brain-computer interfaces (BBA) similar to Elon Musk’s Neuralink. While several brain-chip companies have received approval to sell their devices, insurers have announced the first commercial policies covering the invasive surgery required for implantation. Implanted BBA can translate thoughts into digital or physical actions, enabling users to control computers and robotic systems. China became the first country to approve the commercial use of BBA and declared the technology a strategic sector in its latest 5-year plan. The electrode-equipped headset developed by Tientsin-based Tiankai Suishi is used in cognitive assessment and diagnosis. Neuralink reported receiving more than 10 thousand applications and said at least 26 patients had taken part in trials; computer and robotic limb control was achieved in people with ALS and paralysis of all four limbs. Beijing-backed NeuCyber, meanwhile, said it was approximately three years behind.

Why it matters

This development is significant because BBA are moving beyond being solely a subject of experimental research and becoming a product that can be used in healthcare and cognitive assessment. Policies covering invasive surgery show that the cost and access problems facing the technology have begun to be addressed through the insurance system. The successful control of computers and robotic limbs by people with ALS and paralysis of all four limbs demonstrates the practical value of these applications, particularly for patients experiencing severe movement restrictions. However, Chinese companies are not on equal technical footing with Neuralink; NeuCyber’s statement that it is approximately three years behind shows that the gap between commercial approval and technical maturity persists, leaving open the question of how widely this use will spread.

Background

Musk is not a new name in the FikirPilot archive: we have published 2 reports mentioning this name in the last 90 days; the latest was dated September 3, 2026.
