Google opened early access to the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for the Google Home ecosystem on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. This will allow MCP-enabled artificial intelligence agents such as Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, ChatGPT and Google Antigravity to securely manage smart home devices and access event history with the user’s permission.
Users will be able to review camera summaries, monitor activity in the home, control connected devices and create custom smart home dashboards using natural-language commands. The system will support Google Nest doorbells and thermostats, as well as “Works with Google Home” or Matter devices such as light bulbs.
To set it up, users will create a Google Cloud project and configure Home MCP. Once the configuration details have been provided to the preferred agent, the agent will establish the connection and ask the user to sign in and grant the necessary permissions. A setup guide will also be available in the Google Home Developer Center.
Google already supports MCP across Google Cloud, data platforms, developer tools and Google Workspace. The Google Home integration, meanwhile, is aimed at consumers experimenting with artificial intelligence agents that handle everyday tasks. The company did not say when the feature would become available in other subscription tiers or markets. Feedback from early users will be collected through the Smart Home for Developers Community.

This step moves smart home management away from separate apps and predefined commands to a shared connectivity layer that different artificial intelligence agents can use. For users, the key change is the ability to combine device control with home data, such as camera footage and event history, in the same workflow through natural language. Including Works with Google Home and Matter devices beyond Nest ensures that the impact is not limited to Google hardware. Because access is based on user consent, which permissions are granted to which agent becomes particularly critical for footage from inside the home and activity logs. The lack of an announced timeline for other subscription tiers and markets leaves open the question of who will have access for now.
