Stellantis Showcases Box On Wheels Electric and Driverless Cargo Concept
Driverless cargo vehicle in a modern warehouse

Stellantis Pro One unveiled its fully electric, driverless Box On Wheels (BOW) concept at IAA Transportation in Hanover. The vehicle, which has no windshield, dashboard or driver’s seat, devotes its entire interior volume to transporting packages and cargo.

Developed in partnership with UQI Robotics, BOW is designed for controlled areas such as factories, hospitals, airports and low-emission urban zones. The concept, which will undergo validation testing in Europe, is not yet available to order, and no mass-production plan has been announced.

Why it matters

Removing the driver’s cab introduces a different approach to commercial vehicle design, in which space normally reserved for human occupants is used for cargo. Limiting the concept to controlled areas shows that the driverless transportation approach focuses on facilities where routes and access can be managed rather than on public roads. This scope directly concerns businesses that manage package flows in factories, hospitals, airports and low-emission urban zones. Although validation tests in Europe will assess the vehicle’s suitability for these environments, the fact that it is not available to order and that no mass-production plan has been announced leaves the transition to commercial use uncertain. The available information also does not explain the technical division of responsibilities underlying the partnership with UQI Robotics.

Background
