The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) team took first place in phase 2 of NASA’s LunaRecycle Challenge competition, which focuses on recycling waste from lunar and deep-space missions. The CERBERUZ team won a total of $775,000, placing in both the prototype development and “digital twin” models of recycling systems categories.
The team converts mixed waste into fine powder and reuses it as reinforcement instead of separating materials such as Zotek foam; the resulting material is used in injection molding or the production of 3D printer filament. In the final of the two-phase competition, which has a $3 million budget, 14 finalist teams showcased their prototypes at The University of Alabama between August 24 and 28.

This work demonstrates that waste generated during lunar and deep-space missions could be used to produce new materials rather than simply being disposed of. Converting mixed waste into fine powder aims to make it possible to incorporate some components into the manufacturing process without separating them and to use the resulting material for injection molding or 3D printer filament.
