NASA’s New Goldstone Antenna in the Deep Space Network Becomes Operational
Giant satellite antenna in a desert environment

NASA’s 34-meter Deep Space Station 23 antenna, completed at the Goldstone complex in California, has entered service. Unveiled at a ceremony held on August 25, 2026, DSS-23 will increase the capacity of the Deep Space Network and strengthen communications with deep-space spacecraft. The antenna is one of six new antennas added under the Aperture Enhancement Project, launched in 2009.

Why it matters

This commissioning shows that communications during deep-space missions depend not only on the capabilities of spacecraft in space but also on the capacity of the network on the ground. The new antenna will help distribute the communications load within the Deep Space Network and increase the network’s operational flexibility when establishing links with deep-space spacecraft. The addition of DSS-23 under the project launched in 2009 and covering six new antennas shows that the development is part of a phased infrastructure expansion rather than a standalone installation. However, the information shared by NASA does not explain to what extent the capacity increase will be used in which missions or which spacecraft the antenna will communicate with.
