NASA’s Hubble Images a Superbubble Scene

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope captured the LHA 120-N44 or N44 nebula, located in the Large Magellanic Cloud, the largest of the small galaxies orbiting the Milky Way. Located only 160,000 light-years from Earth, the nebula lies in the constellation Dorado and is notable for its active star-forming regions.

N44’s main structures are a central “superbubble” approximately 210 by 140 light-years across and a dense, dusty shell of gas. The stars at the center have pushed out most of the gas from which they were born through powerful stellar winds and supernovae. New stars are forming in the shell created as this gas was compressed. Astronomers use N44 to study the process from the collapse of cold gas clouds into dense clumps to the beginning of nuclear fusion in the cores of new stars.

As part of observation program #14689, Hubble catalogued approximately half a million stars in and passing in front of the cluster. Nearly 30,000 of these are pre-main-sequence stars that have not yet begun converting hydrogen into helium in their cores. Hubble’s sensitivity and high spatial resolution made it possible to identify these faint young stars in crowded clusters.

The shell of gas surrounding the superbubble glows under the ultraviolet radiation of massive stars. Karl Henize catalogued the structures in the N44 complex during the 1950s; among them is N44F, a small interstellar bubble formed by the stellar winds of a single hot, massive star.

Why it matters

N44 offers an opportunity to study in the same environment how the transformation of gas surrounding massive stars can both bring star formation to an end and trigger new formation. In this respect, the nebula provides a site for understanding the relationship between structures formed under the influence of stellar winds and supernovae and the young stars developing around these structures. Hubble’s ability to distinguish very faint pre-main-sequence stars in a crowded cluster helps enable the direct observation of the early stages of star formation. The observations also lay the groundwork for investigating how the central superbubble and the shell of gas surrounding it are connected through the same process, and when the gas begins to disperse or instead becomes dense enough to support the formation of new stars.
