AMD will acquire World Labs, which develops deep-learning models aimed at understanding physical reality, for $8.2 billion. The companies announced the deal on September 28, 2026. World Labs said that model research, systems, and computing infrastructure need to advance together in AI development, while AMD said such pioneering workloads will shape its chip development roadmap.
Under the deal, World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as vice president and chief scientist. AMD and World Labs formed a partnership last year in inference optimization and training. Li, a computer science professor at Stanford, is known particularly in the field of computer vision for the ImageNet database and the AI competitions it influenced.
Li founded World Labs in 2024 to develop models that better understand the physical world. The company’s first product, Marble, aims to create simulated environments for entertainment experiences and robot training. The concept of a “world model” encompasses a range of technologies, from language models that understand visual inputs to systems that simulate reality with high accuracy.
The acquisition is expected to strengthen AMD’s competition with Nvidia in the AI chip ecosystem. While Nvidia has open-weight world models such as Cosmos, AMD has made only text- and video-based models available to the public. These models are important for generating synthetic training data for autonomous vehicles, industrial robots, and humanoid robots. The deal is expected to be completed before the end of the year, subject to regulatory approval.
