AMD has reached a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs, co-founded by artificial intelligence researcher Fei-Fei Li, in a transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion to be paid in AMD shares. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of 2026, following the completion of regulatory approvals and other conditions.
World Labs develops artificial intelligence models that understand, create and simulate three-dimensional environments. Its Marble product enables the creation of interactive three-dimensional worlds. If the deal is completed, Li will become executive vice president and chief scientist at AMD, while the World Labs team will continue its work within AMD.
Why it matters
This development can be interpreted as an attempt by AMD to expand its artificial intelligence operations beyond existing models into areas such as understanding, generating and simulating three-dimensional environments. The addition of World Labs’ Marble product and team to AMD could enable work on developing interactive three-dimensional worlds to be integrated with the company’s artificial intelligence organization.
