What does OpenAI’s latest controversy say about the future of mathematics?

OpenAI announced that its agents had solved one of the Millennium Prize Problems. However, the company was accused of drawing on AI-assisted work by NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic employee Levent Alpöge without crediting them. OpenAI denied the allegations. While it remains unclear whether the company drew on their work, Sébastien Bubeck, a member of OpenAI’s technical staff, said the team began investigating the problem after hearing a rumor about Buckmaster and Alpöge’s work.

The problem in question is the Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems designated by the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2000. There is a one million dollar prize for a solution, and to date, only one of these problems had been solved. The problem examines whether equations describing the motion of fluids such as water and air can produce invalid results under certain conditions, for example by predicting infinite velocity.

Buckmaster published a proof on Monday showing that a simplified form of the equations could break down; he and Alpöge had worked on it for about a year using OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s publicly available models. OpenAI, meanwhile, presented a proof for the full equations using an internal model that it said was more powerful than the Astra model released last week, and announced that it would not claim the one million dollar prize. According to Buckmaster, OpenAI employees proposed options under which Alpöge would not be listed as an author because of his affiliation with Anthropic.

Why it matters

This debate shows that the results produced by AI systems in mathematical research should be evaluated not only as technical achievements, but also in terms of independent verification and the proper recognition of academic contributions. The difference between the full equations of the Navier–Stokes problem and their simplified forms makes it necessary to clearly specify the scope within which the publicly presented result is valid. Since it has not been established whether OpenAI benefited from the work or, if so, how that contribution came about, the role of the models used by the researchers and the company’s internal systems also remains among the questions awaiting answers. In addition, until the Clay Mathematics Institute completes its assessment, the scientific status of the claim of a solution and its relationship to the prize cannot be considered clear.
