OpenAI’s announcements at Dev Day on September 29, 2026, revealed its plan to turn ChatGPT into a platform where applications are discovered, launched, and used. The company announced that ChatGPT, which it said has 1.2 billion weekly users, will begin recommending applications suited to users’ needs during conversations. Users will be able to connect the recommended applications without leaving the chat.
The expanded plugin architecture will allow developers to create interactive panels within ChatGPT. This will enable tools previously used on the web, desktop, or mobile applications to run directly within the chat. The “Sign in with ChatGPT” feature will allow users to carry their identities and existing AI usage rights over to third-party applications.
There are 16 companies among the initiative’s initial partners:
- Cognition’s Devin, Notion, Vercel, T3, OpenClaw, and Dactyl
In OpenAI’s demonstration, a meeting application displayed calendar events within ChatGPT; users were able to create meeting notes with AI and receive a summary of follow-up items at the end of the meeting. It was also shown that changes could be made to projects using design applications such as Figma and Adobe. Applications could be shared with coworkers through lightweight websites created by ChatGPT; colleagues could sign in using their own permissions and accounts.
The company is also revamping the plugin review process. Developers will be able to track the status of a review, see what needs to be fixed, request a human review, and update their tools without submitting the application again from the beginning.
OpenAI also announced an enterprise application marketplace where companies can offer their services. More than 30 partners are participating initially:
- Adobe, Figma, Sierra, Decagon, HubSpot, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Harvey, Legora, Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike, and Baseten
Eligible customers will be able to direct part of their OpenAI commitments toward approved partner software.
OpenAI’s autonomous agents called Dots will carry out tasks on the web using their own cloud computers and browsers, be able to use connected apps, and connect to more than 4,000 apps. Instead of choosing an app, users will tell the agent what they want to do. With the user’s approval, Dots will be able to conduct proactive research; however, OpenAI has not announced any plans regarding the billing or revenue-sharing systems used in traditional app stores.
Why it matters
This approach moves ChatGPT from being merely a tool that provides answers to becoming a shared entry point for software discovery, identity, and workflows. For users, the need to switch between separate apps is reduced, while for developers, visibility and usage are tied directly to recommendations and interactive panels within the chat. The enterprise marketplace brings software procurement and platform usage together within the same commercial framework by enabling companies to direct their existing OpenAI commitments toward approved software. Dots’ task-centered structure, rather than app selection, makes the relationship between users and third-party services more backgrounded and agent-mediated. However, the lack of an announced billing and revenue-sharing plan leaves open questions about how developers will earn money and what economic model OpenAI will establish.

Term: agent
An artificial intelligence agent is software that calls tools and carries out multi-step tasks to achieve a goal, rather than producing a single response.
