OpenAI launches bubble-themed agent avatar Dots

OpenAI announced Dots, a personal “agentic” assistant powered by GPT-6 Astra, at its DevDay event held on September 29, 2026. The company said Dots would continuously carry out goals defined by users in the background with limited oversight, without being tied to specific hardware or an interface. Users will first be able to create and name a Dots; OpenAI aims to enable multiple Dots to work together in the future.

Dots will be available in ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets starting Tuesday. Users will be able to launch their assistants through Codex or ChatGPT. OpenAI’s examples include a software developer Dots that monitors customer feedback and implements bug fixes and requested features, as well as a scientist Dots that repeats analyses as new experimental data arrives and investigates unexpected results.

Dots will support messaging through Slack, Teams and other enterprise platforms; support for short messages is planned to arrive soon. The company also said that “specialist Dots” taking on specific responsibilities could be configured with custom identities, credentials and tools. OpenAI is working with Microsoft on integration with Agent 365 security audits.

Dots combines similar capabilities in Codex in a new package focused on autonomous actions. Its cartoon-like appearance is intended to make AI more approachable.

Why it matters

The significance of Dots is that it shifts AI use from one-off commands to the background monitoring and execution of goals; this is particularly relevant to teams using repetitive workflows such as software development, customer feedback and scientific analysis. The ability to connect assistants to enterprise channels such as Slack and Teams could make them part of work processes rather than individual chat tools. Configuring specialist Dots with identities, credentials and tools, meanwhile, places enterprise security audits at the center of implementation; integration with Microsoft and Agent 365 stands out as a response to this need. By contrast, the division of responsibility for these structures, which operate with limited oversight, leaves an area of application that has yet to be clearly defined, particularly when multiple Dots work together.
