According to The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI acquired California-based Glass Imaging, founded by former Apple employees Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, for more than 300 million dollars. The startup claims its proprietary artificial intelligence software improves smartphone camera performance by up to 10 times. Its hardware-powered Neural Image Signal Processing technology reduces noise and blur and improves zoom quality, while aiming to correct lens and sensor defects.
The acquisition comes amid ongoing rumors about the mysterious artificial intelligence device OpenAI is developing with Jony Ive. Sam Altman had described the product, which is expected to be unveiled next year, as “the coolest piece of technology the world has ever seen.” Ive had argued that the device could offset some of the harmful effects of smartphones. Altman, meanwhile, had said the product would not be wearable, but would be an unobtrusive device that is aware of its surroundings and life and can sit in a pocket or on a desk.
