Nscale adds former OpenAI executive Fidji Simo to its board ahead of a potential IPO
A modern data center corridor

UK-based artificial intelligence data center startup Nscale has appointed former OpenAI, Meta and Instacart executive Fidji Simo to its board of directors. Simo joined the board, which includes Sheryl Sandberg, Susan Decker and Nick Clegg, ahead of the company’s initial public offering expected this fall. Simo, who served as CEO responsible for artificial general intelligence deployment at OpenAI, stepped down in July for health reasons and continued to provide part-time consulting to the company. Previously serving as Instacart’s president and CEO, Simo took the company to its 2023 IPO; she also worked at Meta for more than a decade, where she led the Facebook app. She also serves on Shopify’s board of directors. Founded two years ago, Nscale has rapidly increased its valuation amid growing demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure. According to Bloomberg, the startup is seeking to raise up to 3.5 billion dollars ahead of its IPO.

Why it matters

Simo’s background creates a framework in which Nscale will be evaluated ahead of its IPO not only for its artificial intelligence infrastructure capacity but also for its management experience. Her taking Instacart to its 2023 IPO and assuming senior responsibilities at Meta and OpenAI show that the board brings together experience in technology, consumer products and capital markets. The appointment therefore carries significance particularly in terms of how Nscale will communicate with investors and manage its IPO preparations. However, it remains unclear how the company’s rapid increase in valuation and its target of raising up to 3.5 billion dollars will be received during the IPO process. Following Simo’s departure from OpenAI for health reasons, the scope of her role at Nscale also remains one of the areas to watch.
