Anthropic brings Claude Chat and Cowork together in a single interface
A modern digital workspace

Anthropic is combining Claude Chat with Cowork, which was developed for long-running, multi-step tasks, in a single interface. Claude will decide between a simple response and a comprehensive workflow based on the prompt; conversations will be able to evolve into projects, and tasks will be able to continue even if the user turns off their computer.

The unified window will include chat, Cowork, Artifacts, and Claude Design, which is being brought into chats. After the transition, the Cowork name will be retired, while chats, projects, content, connections, and skills will be preserved; Claude will gain agentic capabilities for breaking tasks into stages, using tools, and working while the user is away. Claude Code, meanwhile, will remain a separate product for terminals and integrated development environments; the main structure will consist of Chat and Claude Code.

Claude Docs, offered in beta, enables collaborative document creation, editing, commenting, and sharing via links, while Claude Slides allows users to generate presentations from chats, edit slides, and present within Claude. Presentations can be exported to PowerPoint or PDF, and documents to Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Work created in Docs, Slides, and Design can be stored under a single link and edited on mobile devices. By default, Claude will ask for permission before taking action; an option for autonomous work will also be available. The features will roll out to Pro and Max users in the coming weeks, followed by Team and Free plans.

Why it matters

This integration reduces the need for users to choose separate products for short chats and tool-using, multi-step tasks that continue while they are offline. Although the Cowork name is being retired, preserving existing chats, projects, content, and links allows ongoing workflows to continue within the same structure. Bringing Docs, Slides, and Design together under a single link and enabling exports to different file formats moves Claude closer to a shared workspace for creating documents and presentations, rather than merely a chat tool that generates responses. Offering both pre-action permission and autonomous work options leaves the choice between user control and the level of automation directly to the user. The main question that remains is how accurately Claude will choose between a simple response and a comprehensive workflow.
