“Saturday Night Live” satirized the latest doomsday warnings from the artificial intelligence industry. In the program, Jane Wickline portrayed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, while Michael Che covered a press tour in which Amodei seemingly agreed with a former employee’s claim that artificial intelligence could destroy humanity. Amodei, portrayed by Wickline wearing a wig, frequently turned his answers into dark, Gollum-style inner monologues and said that artificial intelligence was “the devil, and also its own creator.” The character, who said he did not approve of what artificial intelligence executives were doing in the sketch, argued that the technology was not a weapon but a tool for producing weapons. Regarding the possibility of curing cancer, he said there was approximately a 10% chance that cancer would no longer be a problem within 10 years.
Why it matters
This sketch shows that the artificial intelligence debate is not limited to statements from within the industry, but is also addressed in popular culture through the discourse of risk. The juxtaposition in the same narrative of different outcomes, such as the possibility of humanity’s extinction and a cure for cancer, makes visible the tension between claims about technology’s threats and benefits. For this reason, the issue also raises questions about whether artificial intelligence can be presented only as a threat or a solution, and what these assessments are based on. The unresolved question is how issues such as weapons production, humanity’s future and medical advances will be weighed within the framework of the same technology, and who will be responsible for the consequences that may emerge.
