Anthropic confirmed that it operates a wet biology laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area where it can use AI models in physical biology experiments. The company’s head of life sciences, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, said that real laboratory work would remain the ultimate test in biology research for some time and that Anthropic is doing this today. The laboratory hosts both in-house research and work conducted with external partners.
Anthropic acquired the secretive AI biotechnology company Coefficient Bio in April. The company stated that the laboratory focuses on basic biology and that drug discovery is not its primary objective. This approach was reportedly intended to ensure that Anthropic, whose major customers and partners include pharmaceutical companies, does not appear to be competing with the pharmaceutical industry. The company had also announced an agreement with Novo Nordisk for joint drug discovery.
This week, Anthropic launched the Life Sciences Verification Program, which gives vetted biology researchers access to its most powerful models. It also published reports on accelerating protein design and improving bimolecular modeling.
