OpenAI introduced Dots, a personal AI agent that can continue tasks even after the chat ends, at the DevDay event yesterday. Dots monitors projects, updates work with new information, and presents the results for review. Users can name their agents and teach them their preferences as they work together. In the company’s examples, Dots analyzes app feedback and prepares solutions to problems; for content creators, it creates short video clips, notes, and social media drafts from interviews.
Each agent has its own cloud computer that can use a browser, files, and tools. Users can connect their own computers to provide access to spreadsheets or development tools; OpenAI says it keeps the environments separate. Dots works through ChatGPT, voice calls, Slack, and Microsoft Teams, and can connect to more than 4 thousand apps. Access is permission-based.
Dots uses ChatGPT memory, but remembered information cannot be edited or deleted directly. Proactive research, meanwhile, is limited to reading permitted sources and creating notes; it cannot send messages, modify content, or control the computer.
Why it matters
Dots’ standout feature is that it moves the use of AI from one-off chats to ongoing workflows; this is particularly relevant to teams working on projects and content creators. While the Agent’s ability to work with different applications helps users bring tasks together in a single interface, which tools and data it can access makes permission management a central issue. By contrast, the fact that information stored in ChatGPT memory cannot be directly edited or deleted by the user leaves the boundary between personalization and control open. Proactive research’s lack of permission to send messages or modify content narrows the scope of security; however, this introduction does not answer how consistent the results in the examples will be across different tasks.
