Thinking About Nuclear Engines
Spacecraft engine prototype

Kurt Polzin of NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and Robert Schleicher of General Atomics developed a nuclear rocket design on a napkin at a conference. The idea of a synchronized bimodal nuclear engine aims to cut the journey to Mars in half by combining electric and nuclear thermal propulsion. The project is still in the design phase; engineers are working on the challenges involved in bringing existing technologies together.

Why it matters

The significance of this design lies in its effort to bring electric and nuclear thermal systems together in the same engine configuration, rather than relying on a single propulsion method for the journey to Mars. Such an approach directly links the goal of reducing travel time to the challenge of making propulsion technologies work together. For this reason, the development is not merely a new idea, particularly for those interested in the engineering requirements of Mars missions and nuclear rocket technologies; it is also a design study on how existing technologies could be combined. However, the key question that remains is how the technical challenges arising from the simultaneous use of these two systems will be resolved and whether the design can be turned into a viable engine.
