NASA’s MODIS instrument aboard the Terra satellite captured a dust storm covering the ground in Mali on September 5, 2026. While dust activity generally declines in West Africa as summer comes to an end, the storm in early September formed a cloud covering parts of Mali and neighboring countries. According to Tianle Yuan, an atmospheric scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, such events are associated with haboobs driven by strong convective winds.
In the following days, satellite imagery showed aerosols in the region moving westward and spreading over the Atlantic Ocean; however, they are unlikely to cross the ocean completely. These movements are more common in late spring and summer, when the Saharan Air Layer, a dry and dusty air mass, carries dust thousands of kilometers westward from Africa at high altitudes.
Developing El Niño could affect the pattern by shifting the Intertropical Convergence Zone over the Sahel and Mali and altering convection. While drought increases loose sediment, low convection can reduce haboobs. Yuan said the connection may be real, but that it is difficult to determine in individual events.
Why it matters
This event shows that dust transport in the Sahel does not come to a complete end even as the end of summer approaches, and that seasonal patterns alone may not provide a sufficient explanation. The transport of dust to the Atlantic Ocean indicates that the process is not limited to Mali and neighboring countries; however, there is no evidence that the impact will extend beyond the ocean. The relationship between developing El Niño and precipitation patterns, drought, and convective winds makes it more difficult to assess the causes and timing of similar events. Therefore, the open question is the extent to which changes in the climate affect the frequency and intensity of regional dust storms at the level of individual events; current data are insufficient to establish this connection conclusively.
