On Sunday night, users of Meta’s AI assistant Muse encountered an error message stating that their access had been blocked while trying to purchase products from Amazon. The message said that using an unauthorized AI agent violated Amazon’s Terms of Use accepted by customers. As a result, it is not possible to shop on Amazon through Muse.
Amazon’s own foundation model group and its ownership of one of the most popular inference platforms on the internet suggest that the block may be related to competition among technology companies. However, there are other reasons why the company may still be wary of agent-mediated commerce. An incorrect order placed by Muse could require Amazon to resolve issues involving the customer and seller. Although Muse’s hallucination rate is low, it is not zero.
