Meta introduced a wearable device called Muse Charm to accompany its personal AI agent Muse. Although the idea of an AI amulet in the technology sector has drawn criticism from consumers because of products like Friend, Meta has entered this space.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the device during a “one more thing” presentation at the company’s annual Connect event. Saying that the product’s components are still being finalized, Zuckerberg said Muse Charm would be ready to ship during the holiday season in December.
Muse’s digital avatar, known internally at the company as Jolly, is housed inside the palm-sized totem that can be placed in a pocket or attached to a keychain. A small screen displays the avatar representing the agent. Users can talk to the device; Muse is intended to perform tasks on their behalf.
By touching the fingerprint sensor in the corner of the device, users can talk to Muse without unlocking their phone or launching an app. Zuckerberg said that when glasses are not being worn, the product would be the fastest way to communicate with Muse and show it what is happening around them.
The lightweight, characterful device, reminiscent of a Tamagotchi, aims to keep users connected to Meta’s software. Muse Charm will also allow Meta to experiment with its AI wearables with lower risk and bring its agent to a broader audience.
Why it matters
Muse Charm stands out as Meta’s attempt to make its AI agent available through a directly accessible device other than a phone or glasses. This approach highlights the company’s goal of integrating its AI services into everyday use through hardware and keeping users within its own software ecosystem. Since the product was unveiled amid ongoing consumer criticism of AI-powered devices, whether it gains acceptance will depend not only on its technical features but also on how much appeal this form of use has. The fact that its components have not yet been finalized leaves open the question of what features and usage limitations the device will have when it reaches the market.
