Meta has announced the Horizon Create and Horizon Studio tools, which allow users with no coding experience to create two- or three-dimensional mobile games using text prompts. Waitlist registrations have opened for the tools, which are in early access.
The standalone Horizon Create app uses artificial intelligence to create playable games while allowing users to modify the characters and story with additional prompts. The browser-based Horizon Studio offers more detailed adjustments to scenes, assets and scripts; projects can be transferred between phones and browsers.
Games are published in Facebook, Instagram and Horizon feeds. Each production undergoes safety testing and receives an automatic age rating before being released. As Meta brings its virtual reality-focused platform to mobile, it is expanding the experience it gained with the Pocket app.
Why it matters
These tools are turning game development into a creative field that can also include users without technical expertise, lowering the skill threshold required to move from an idea to playable content. The ability to transfer projects between phones and browsers removes the production process’ dependence on a single device while potentially making it easier for different user groups to work on the same project. Publishing content in Meta’s existing feeds means new games can reach users without requiring them to search for a separate store or app. Safety checks and automatic age ratings provide a framework for how this distribution will be managed for children and families; however, the scope of early access and the variety of the content created remain unclear.
