Shopify introduced its Canvas tool on 1 October 2026, enabling merchants to build online stores by chatting with AI. In the previous no-code builder, users had to edit sections and blocks in pre-built themes; coding or developer support was required for more extensive changes. In Canvas, the store is built through prompts given to Shopify’s AI agent, Sidekick.
Canvas displays changes in real time. Users can monitor the store’s overall appearance, zoom in on specific details, and view the page at different screen sizes. According to Shopify, this view is not merely a static preview but the store’s actual code being executed. This makes it possible to test interactions and animations as well. During updates, Sidekick takes screenshots to track the view seen by the user.
Users can also edit by clicking directly on elements if they wish. Sidekick was previously used for tasks such as writing code, creating apps, and customizing themes; with Canvas, it can work on the store’s actual files and edit the entire site in a single view. To enable this, access to theme files was provided and the theme architecture was simplified.
The product is still in its early stages. The initial version does not include support for third-party themes, app blocks and extensions, markets, translations, rollouts, or theme updates; Canvas works only on desktop. Shopify plans to support these features over time. Canvas could lower the barrier to entering online sales for those without a developer or designer budget.
Why it matters
This approach reduces the dependence on developers for sellers with limited technical knowledge or developer budgets during the store-building process, while allowing them to experiment with design decisions in conversational language. Being able to inspect the actual code through the rendered view means that not only visual preferences but also interactions and animations can be checked before launch. On the other hand, the first version’s lack of support for third-party themes, app blocks and extensions, markets, translations, rollouts, and theme updates limits the tool particularly to users working with Shopify’s existing theme architecture and proceeding from a desktop. The open question, therefore, is to what extent Canvas will meet the needs of different themes and stores, and how far it can replace developer support.
Background
Shopify is not a new name in the FikirPilot archive: in the last 90 days, we published a news article mentioning this name; that article was dated September 29, 2026.
