IVECO and Toyota are developing the S-eWay Fuel Cell truck for long-haul transport as part of the Horizon Europe EMPOWER project. The vehicle, for which Toyota will supply the fuel cell system, is targeting a total power output of 300 kW, a range of more than 900 kilometers and an operating life exceeding 25,000 hours. IVECO will be responsible for development, integration and validation.
The new energy management system is expected to enable the use of a battery half the size of the previous generation’s. The announced figures have not yet been independently validated in a customer fleet. The vehicle’s overall environmental impact will also depend on the production method used for the hydrogen.
Why it matters
The project is a real-world test of whether hydrogen fuel cells can meet the range, power and durability requirements of long-haul transport in a single vehicle. The goal of reducing the battery to half the size of the previous generation’s shows that the balance between the fuel cell and battery in energy management is being recalibrated. Toyota supplying the system and IVECO taking responsibility for integration and validation means that performance depends not only on the components but also on how they work together. For fleet operators, the key benchmark will be the independent validation of the range and operating-life targets under customer conditions. The environmental assessment cannot be separated from the production method used for the hydrogen; the current technical targets alone do not provide a conclusion on this issue.
