The market research startup Listen Labs, which conducts customer interviews using voice AI, has backed out of a signed term agreement for a $125 million Series C round led by Menlo Ventures at a $1.5 billion valuation. According to several sources, the round never closed. The decision is believed to be connected to talks Salesforce is holding to acquire the company for approximately $2 billion. However, the talks are not final and may not result in a deal.
Founded in 2023 by Florian Jüngermann and Alfred Wahlforss, Listen Labs has annualized revenue of approximately $30 million. That figure is roughly three times the revenue of its rival Simile, which predicts human behavior. Simile completed a $200 million Series B round led by Greenoaks at a $2 billion valuation at the end of July. This is said to have established a new valuation benchmark for Listen Labs. If the Salesforce talks fail, some investors expect the startup to seek funding again and target a valuation of $2 billion or higher. However, according to one source, Salesforce may consider a 67-fold revenue multiple too high.
Listen Labs’ AI prepares survey questions, conducts voice or video interviews with customers, and turns conversations into reports and PowerPoint presentations. The technology aims to accelerate research and reduce costs compared with traditional methods. Its customers include Microsoft, Canva, Anthropic, and Sweetgreen.
Other ventures in the market include Outset, Keplar, Aaru, and Simile. While some platforms automate interviews with real people, companies such as Aaru and Simile simulate human behavior with AI. Listen Labs was valued at $500 million in the $69 million Series B round it announced at the end of January, led by Ribbit Capital; Sequoia, Conviction, and Pear VC also participated in the round. Investors and the companies did not respond to requests for comment.
Why it matters
This development shows that AI-powered market research startups hold strategic value not only for investors but also for enterprise software companies such as Salesforce. The gap between Listen Labs’ revenue and the investment received by its rival Simile highlights the question of how valuation benchmarks are taking shape among platforms that automate human interviews and simulate behavior. For companies such as Microsoft, Canva, Anthropic, and Sweetgreen that use the technology, the ownership structure under which tools offering speed and cost advantages in research processes will develop is gaining importance. The key open question is whether the Salesforce talks will conclude and, if they do not, what valuation Listen Labs will face in its search for new funding.
