Google’s Gemini Spark can now manage your Google Photos library

Google announced that its personal assistant Gemini Spark can manage users’ Google Photos libraries. Users will be able to ask the assistant to edit photos, create albums, automatically prepare shared albums with selected images, turn information on concert posters into calendar appointments, and run various workflows. The company did not disclose when or to what extent the feature will be rolled out to international markets.

To use Gemini Spark with Google Photos, users must first connect the two services, then activate Spark from the upper corner of the Gemini app and enter a command. Google’s announcement is being viewed as an example of companies’ efforts to make artificial intelligence more appealing to consumers and simplify the management of extensive photo archives.

At a time when the artificial intelligence industry is struggling to explain its promises to consumers, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Bloomberg this week that the industry had done a “terrible job” of communicating the benefits of the technology. The report said competition was pushing companies to highlight even minor artificial intelligence updates, and that while these features could make some tasks easier, they might not appear revolutionary.

Why it matters

This development raises the prospect of Google Photos evolving from merely an archive where images are stored and found into a service that is organized through user commands and connected to different functions. Particularly for users who struggle to organize extensive photo libraries manually, tasks such as creating and sharing albums and turning information in images into calendar actions could be handled through a single assistant. However, using the feature requires the two services to be connected and Spark to be enabled separately in the Gemini app, leaving open the question of how easily the experience will be adopted. Since it is not known in which countries, when, or to what extent the feature will be made available, the practical impact of the announcement is limited for now. The development also shows the efforts of artificial intelligence companies to explain everyday benefits through small, concrete workflows.
