Google's $899 Googlebook is betting you'll buy a new laptop for Gemini

Google announced that the Googlebook laptop running the Android operating system, which it introduced in May, is now available for pre-order at $899. Carrying familiar elements from the desktop Chrome browser and ChromeOS, the device brings Gemini’s artificial intelligence features to the laptop format.

Googlebook features an AI-powered cursor called Magic Cursor, which offers functions such as selecting content on a web page and having Gemini analyze it, asking whether emails hovered over with the cursor are suspicious, and redesigning images together. The feature is compared to Android’s “Circle to Search” function. The author notes that Magic Cursor is not expected to be the main selling point. Rambler, meanwhile, turns scattered thoughts spoken aloud into readable text; however, according to the author, this feature alone is not enough to justify buying a new device either. Vibe-coding widgets, Gemini Spark, and Gemini Live also do not require dedicated hardware.

Google’s longer-term goal is to direct users in the K-12 market toward Gemini by gradually replacing the Chromebook experience used in schools with the Googlebook experience. Google said there are approximately 50 million Chromebooks used by students and educators in schools. The company stated that existing Chromebooks will continue to be supported and that some of them may transition to the new experience in the future.

The $899 device includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, 5TB of cloud storage, Gemini Advanced tools, and 3 months of YouTube Premium along with access to Adobe Photoshop. Google announced that updates will continue for up to 10 years and that battery life will be up to 14 hours.

Pre-orders have begun on the Google Store, Best Buy and other retailers. The devices will go on sale in the US on October 4, and in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia on October 5.

  • Manufacturers: Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo
  • Specifications: up to 2.8K OLED display, haptic glass trackpad, backlit keyboard, Intel and Qualcomm processors, and dedicated NPUs

Why it matters

The real significance of Googlebook lies less in individual AI tools than in Google’s attempt to combine its laptop and Gemini use in a single experience. This approach introduces a new usage model for schools using the existing Chromebook infrastructure, as well as for students and educators in K-12 education; however, it remains unclear to what extent existing devices will transition to the new experience. For users, the key question is whether the subscription and storage bundle offered with the device will turn functions that do not require specialized hardware into a reason to purchase a new computer. For manufacturers, moving forward with different hardware partners shows that Google is not limiting this experience to a single brand model. As a result, the focus of the debate is shifting away from the feature list and toward whether Gemini’s role in school and everyday computer use will expand.
