Google Is Changing Gemini Availability!

Google will gradually change access to Gemini models for personal accounts this month. The new rules for unsubscribed free users will begin on October 9. These users will only be able to use Flash-Lite models, and their access will be limited to the entry level. Access will be differentiated according to the subscription package. AI Plus subscribers will have access to Flash-Lite and standard Flash models; Google will notify them by email of the date when the new rules will be applied to their accounts. At least an AI Pro subscription will be required for the “Pro” models. The company will also add three thinking levels—low, medium, and high—to all Gemini models. Users will be able to choose based on the complexity of their tasks.

Why it matters

The change makes model selection in Gemini directly tied to the account type rather than merely a technical preference. This means that free users and users on different subscription packages will not have access to the same tools for the same tasks; the subscription level will become decisive, particularly for those using Pro models. As a result, Google’s AI experience for personal accounts will rely on a tiered model instead of a single access standard. The low, medium, and high thinking levels will give users the option to choose the level required by the task. However, how these levels will differ in practice and the date on which each account will be affected by the change will become clear through Google’s notifications.
