Google is rolling out AI-powered voice assistant features for Gmail, Docs and Keep. The real-time conversational features called Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live enable users to control the apps through voice. Users can find information hands-free, get summaries and transcribe their conversations.
Gmail Live finds information in the inbox without requiring users to search through long email threads. For example, it can search for the date of a child’s next school event and relay the result in a spoken, summarized format; the source emails are linked in the on-screen transcript. Users can ask follow-up questions without starting a new conversation or interrupt the response midway.
Docs Live can turn ideas described in conversation into structured documents; it can summarize long texts or turn them into business proposals. If permission is granted, it can retrieve information from Gmail, Drive, Chat and the web. Keep Live, meanwhile, transcribes natural conversations and organizes notes according to context; for example, it can add “ingredients for pesto” to a shopping list.
Introduced at Google I/O in May, the features are rolling out globally today in English and on mobile platforms. Gmail Live is available on iOS and Android under the Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra plans. Docs Live and Keep Live are coming to the AI Pro and Ultra plans; Keep Live works only on Android, while Docs works on iOS and Android. All three features will be offered to Workspace business customers as “coming soon.”
Why it matters
These features are changing how users access information and create content, especially on mobile devices, by reducing the need to use keyboards and screens for email, document and note-related tasks. In Gmail, linking source emails through the transcript makes it possible to check which information a voice response is based on, preserving the need for verification in long email threads. Docs’ ability to retrieve information from different Google services speeds up document preparation, while making the question of which content is included in the process important for users. The limited availability of the features depending on plan and platform means that not all users will have access to the same functions. For businesses, it is not yet clear when the Workspace rollout will begin.
