Emerald AI, Google, and NVIDIA have established the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA), which aims to enable data centers to dynamically manage their electricity consumption according to grid conditions. Described as the first alliance of its kind, it aims not only to connect AI infrastructure to the grid but also to enable it to work with the grid.
Electricity capacity in the United States is one of the main constraints on the growth of AI infrastructure. Flexible data centers can shift workloads, use storage, benefit from matched generation, and respond to emergencies. This can enable existing capacity to be used more efficiently, reduce demand during periods of system stress, and defer costly infrastructure investments.
AEMA will be a technology-neutral structure focused on measurable performance rather than the hardware or software used. Its principles include:
- Defining uninterrupted operation, curtailment, and emergency response obligations before connection.
- Standardizing technical requirements, performance metrics, and the sharing of operational data.
- Establishing faster connection processes for customers whose flexibility commitments can be verified.
- Allocating connection costs according to the actual impact on the grid and the benefits provided.
The alliance will bring together AI platforms, infrastructure providers, data center operators, technology companies, manufacturers, utilities, and regional grid operators. NVIDIA and Emerald AI are working on AI facilities capable of responding to grid conditions in real time.
