LinkedIn is introducing a new system to prevent fake work experience
Office card and laptop

LinkedIn has announced a new system that will allow members to verify one another’s work and education experience in an environment where artificial intelligence makes it easier to create fake accounts and identities. Companies will also have greater control over accounts associated with their brands. Unlike traditional recommendations and skill endorsements, the system will not evaluate performance; it will confirm that individuals worked or studied at the same institution during a specific period. Existing tools have been used to verify 115 million users and more than 700 thousand companies. LinkedIn Vice President of Product Oscar Rodriguez said that imitating credibility had become cheaper and easier. Members will be able to verify the experiences of current or former colleagues and former classmates. For verification:

  • The verifier’s profile must have been verified in advance.
  • The accounts must have been connected for at least one year.
  • Two-factor authentication must be enabled on the verifying account.

Why it matters

This approach reduces the extent to which information on professional profiles relies solely on the individual’s own statements, providing an additional basis for assessing trust in hiring processes and when making new connections. However, because verification does not measure a person’s success or competence, it preserves the distinction between the existence of work experience and the quality of that experience. The requirements of a connection lasting at least one year, a previously verified profile and two-factor authentication distinguish the process from random endorsements, while also potentially narrowing the pool of people who can perform verification. Greater oversight by companies of accounts associated with their brands may make accountability visible in the representative relationship between employees and organizations. At the same time, it remains unclear to what extent members who do not meet these conditions will be able to verify their experiences.

Background

LinkedIn is not a new name in the FikirPilot archive: in the last 90 days, we published a news article mentioning this name; that article was dated August 30, 2026.
