Discord is launching the age verification system it previously postponed due to privacy objections for all users starting Wednesday. The company will not request identity documents or biometric data; it will assess existing data such as account history, devices, activity, and usage patterns. Accounts will be classified as adults, teens, or age-unverified. According to CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy, more than 90% of users will not require any additional action. The plan drew criticism in February over the privacy risks of identity checks and face scans. In addition, identity photos and selfie images belonging to approximately 70 thousand people may have been exposed in a data breach at a third-party service provider last year. A machine learning model will examine usage patterns; messages, profiles, and demographic information will not be used.
