Airbnb adds AI search and more social features

Airbnb is expanding its app with its fall product update, adding both non-accommodation services and AI and social features. New options are being added to the services launched last year in limited regions:

  • Food delivery
  • Laundry services
  • Baby equipment rental
  • Ski and boat rentals
  • Expanded grocery delivery

The company is also rolling out AI-powered search. Users will be able to search for accommodations using text or voice commands by enabling a toggle. Dynamic filters based on preferences will be shown during the search. For example, the term “baby” will reveal additional filters such as cribs, play areas, children’s books, and toys. AI will highlight relevant features of properties and enable users to compare accommodations on their wish lists based on summaries and reviews.

CEO Brian Chesky said this is Airbnb’s first step in AI search and that the feature will be rapidly improved over the coming months. In his view, the main challenge is adapting the search function to e-commerce without reducing the conversion rate.

Airbnb is also expanding social features that encourage users to book more travel and experiences such as food tastings and craft workshops. Users will now be able to see their connections’ past or upcoming trips on a map and access accommodation and experience information by tapping on a trip. While the option not to share trips remains available, neighborhood pages based on guest reviews and other sources are also being prepared.

Why it matters

This move shows that Airbnb aims to push beyond the limits of being merely a platform for booking accommodation and bring together different travel-related needs within the same user flow. The fact that the services are being offered in limited regions reveals that the impact of the new model depends as much on local supply and operational capacity as it does on the user experience. AI-powered search may change how users express what they are looking for; however, as Airbnb itself acknowledges, it remains unclear whether more personalized results will make booking decisions easier. Social features, meanwhile, transform travel from an individual search into an experience shared with connections, making preferences regarding the extent to which personal travel information is visible more important.
