Google Pics Resembles Canva but Offers Far More AI
A graphic designer’s desk

Google has introduced Google Pics, bringing together AI-powered image generation and editing tools for Workspace users. Built on Gemini and the Nano Banana model, the application aims to make it easier for businesses to create professional visuals. Users will be able to select specific objects or text in an image and modify them with prompts; images can be generated from scratch, while text can be reformatted or translated.

Google Pics is being offered as a standalone Workspace application while also being integrated into Google Docs and Slides. The company said the Drive integration will become available “in the coming weeks.” The tool enables users to upscale images to 2K or 4K resolution, crop them for web, social media, print and digital use, and collaborate by sharing designs with teammates.

Google said businesses encounter inconsistent results and cumbersome workflows across different applications when generating AI images for marketing campaigns, customer presentations and product explanations. Canva and Adobe Express offer similar features. Pics, which began testing in May following Google I/O, has started becoming available to users of the Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus plans, as well as Google AI Pro, Ultra and Google AI Pro for Education.

Why it matters

Google Pics’s main distinction lies in connecting AI-powered image generation and editing to the document, presentation and file workflows within Workspace. This is intended to reduce the need to switch between different tools and address content consistency issues for teams preparing marketing campaigns, customer presentations and product explanations. However, the fact that Canva and Adobe Express offer similar features means Google’s advantage must be assessed not only by its image-generation capabilities but also by how seamlessly it integrates with Workspace. The fact that Drive integration is not yet available also leaves open the question of how the file-management and collaboration experience will take shape. The plans on offer indicate that the tool is targeting business- and education-focused Workspace users rather than individual users.
