Volvo is increasing the usable battery capacity of the updated XC60 and XC90 T8 plug-in hybrids for 2028 to 37.9 kWh. The battery, with a gross capacity of 41.2 kWh, provides an electric range of 78 miles (125 km) for the XC60 and 73 miles (117 km) for the XC90, according to EPA testing. The XC60 T8 can travel 590 miles (949 km) with a full battery and fuel tank. Volvo says its users in the US have an average round-trip commute of 22 miles (35 km) and that the new range could cover three days of driving.
The 2018 XC60 PHEV offered a net battery capacity of 10.4 kWh and a range of 17 miles (27 km). In 2023, capacity increased to 14.9 kWh and range to 35 miles (56 km).
The updated design of the XC60, which had sold more than 2.7 million units worldwide by the end of last year, features “Thor’s Hammer” headlights with matrix LED projectors, a slimmer grille and bumper, changes to the fenders and some body panels. The interior gains a ventilated leather option and a Gemini-powered, Android Automotive OS-based 11.2-inch infotainment system. The XC90 is also getting the same system but undergoing more limited design changes. The XC60 will be produced at Volvo’s South Carolina plant as well as in Sweden.
