Netflix’s revival of *A Different World* has been renewed for a second season. A continuation of the sitcom that aired on NBC from 1987-1993, the series follows a new generation at Hillman University, which provides education to Black students. At the center of the story is Deborah, the youngest child of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, played by Maleah Joi Moon.
In the second season, Deborah and her friends return to campus for their sophomore year after the changes they have experienced. As the characters confront past decisions, an uncertain future, new romances, friendships and questions about their purpose in life, they also face new challenges.
- Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece and Chibuikem Uche are part of the cast.
- Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy are returning to their roles, while Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Ajai Sanders and Jada Pinkett Smith are also returning.
Felicia Pride is the series’ creator, writer, showrunner and executive producer. Debbie Allen, who directed 83 episodes of the original series, is also serving as a director and executive producer. The first season received praise from critics.
Why it matters
This decision gives the production room to carry forward the legacy of the characters and world inherited from the original series alongside the story of a new generation. Thus, the presence of figures such as Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy, who preserve the connection to the previous production, comes together within the same narrative as the transformation experienced by Deborah and her friends. Felicia Pride’s creative responsibilities, along with Debbie Allen’s history with the original series and her role in the new production, stand out as the main elements strengthening continuity between the two eras. However, with the characters returning for a second year, how a balance will be struck between their past decisions and their new relationships and search for purpose remains the central question the season is expected to answer.
