Netflix has announced the title of the sequel starring Brad Pitt as The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth. Set 8 years after the events of the 2019 film Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, namely in 1977, the movie will explore Cliff Booth’s encounter with a changing Hollywood. The production is scheduled to be released on the platform on December 23.
The film, written by Quentin Tarantino, will be directed by David Fincher. The cast also includes Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Peter Weller. Tarantino, who plans to step away from directing, shelved The Movie Critic, which was expected to be his final film, and turned to theater.
Why it matters
The production raises the question of how the world established by Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood will continue without Tarantino at the helm. With Tarantino writing the screenplay and David Fincher directing, the sequel is worth watching not only as a continuation of the character’s story, but also as an exploration of the same material through a different directorial approach. Cliff Booth’s encounter with a changing Hollywood in 1977 offers a framework focused on how the industry and the character’s position will transform following the period depicted in the first film. Tarantino shelving The Movie Critic and turning to theater also makes this project one of his late-period works in which he is involved as a screenwriter rather than a director; however, it remains unclear how the film will establish its connection to the original production.
