Netflix has released the first images from the World War II film The Mosquito Bowl, starring Bill Skarsgård and Nicholas Galitzine. Adapted from Buzz Bissinger’s bestselling book The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, the film will premiere on November 25. Directed by Peter Berg, the film tells the true story of John McLaughry, Bob Baumann, Tony Butkovich and David Schreiner, who left their sports careers behind and joined the U.S. Marine Corps following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Preparing for the Okinawa campaign, the 4 American football stars face off in a legendary game that would be the last for many of them. The cast also includes Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis. To achieve realism during filming in Australia, stunt doubles were not used in many scenes. Galitzine said the explosions, flames and sounds of battle made him feel as though he were in a real war zone. Berg said the project honors the memory of the Marines who sacrificed their lives in 1944 and 1945. The first images drew considerable attention on social media.

Why it matters

The production’s weight lies in addressing the war not only through the experience of the front, but also through the lives and losses of young soldiers from the world of sports. This choice will interest not only those who follow World War II narratives, but also viewers curious about how the stories of real people are transformed in cinema. Its adaptation from Buzz Bissinger’s book makes the narrative’s relationship with historical material a decisive factor in assessing the film. The emphasis on realism in the first images and during filming brings to the fore the question of to what extent the production can turn the atmosphere of war into a convincing and personal experience. The unresolved issue is how the symbolic power of sports rivalry will be balanced in the narrative with the weight of the losses suffered in the war.
