An animated series based on the world-famous video game franchise Diablo is being developed for Netflix. The announcement was made by Blizzard Entertainment President Johanna Faries at the opening of BlizzCon 2026, held at the Anaheim Convention Center last Saturday.

The series will be set in the dark world of Sanctuary, where humanity is caught in the midst of an eternal war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells. The project was described as the latest step in Blizzard’s strategy of bringing its game universes to different media. The company stated that details would be shared in the future and that this was only the beginning.

The first game in Diablo, one of the pioneers of the action role-playing genre, was released in 1996. New information about the game was also shared alongside the series on the franchise’s 30th anniversary. Diablo II was released in 2000, Diablo III in 2012, and Diablo IV in 2023; it was announced that Diablo V would be released in the spring of 2029. The first BlizzCon held after Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard for 69 billion dollars in 2023 drew strong interest from fans.

Why it matters

This move shows that Diablo is being positioned not merely as a brand limited to games, but as a narrative universe that can continue across different media. In terms of Blizzard’s approach to bringing its game worlds to other formats, the Netflix series is being considered alongside the announcements surrounding the franchise’s 30th anniversary; however, since details about the production have not yet been disclosed, the scope and release schedule of the adaptation remain uncertain. For this reason, the development concerns both the franchise’s long-time followers and those who will watch the Diablo universe in series format. The date announced for Diablo V suggests that the series is not a standalone project, but is being considered as part of the franchise’s ongoing planning alongside its previous games; nevertheless, there is no information about a direct connection between the two productions.
