Netflix’s new miniseries Below is being compared to Widow’s Bay, Apple TV’s Emmy record-breaking supernatural comedy. In the six-episode series, Josh Hartnett plays a gruff fisherman who comes face to face with a mysterious sea creature terrorizing a small town in Newfoundland. Widow’s Bay, meanwhile, is set on an isolated island in New England.
A critic at the Financial Times called Below “Netflix’s answer to Widow’s Bay.” An X user also wrote that Below is a more gripping small-community mystery series with better pacing, but noted they had only watched two episodes so far.
The series’ creator Jesse McKeown and executive producer Jessica Rhoades told The Hollywood Reporter that the two shows have very different tones. Rhoades said she had been familiar with Widow’s Bay creator Katie Dippold’s script for years and that the two projects had different goals. McKeown said he was worried when he saw the rival show’s trailer, but people who had watched it assured him the two productions were different.
Widow’s Bay star Kate O’Flynn also told The Independent she had not expected the downtrodden character of Patricia to connect so strongly with viewers. Below is streaming on Netflix.
