Apple TV has renewed Imperfect Women, which was designed as a miniseries, for a second season. The decision came roughly 5 months after the first season ended.

Emmy winner Kerry Washington will return to the screen as Eleanor. Justin Hillian, known for The Chi and Snowfall, will share showrunner duties in the new season with the series’ creator and first-season showrunner Annie Weisman.

In the first season of the series, adapted from Araminta Hall’s novel, Washington was joined by Elisabeth Moss and Kate Mara. It has not yet been announced whether Moss will return as an actress, but it has been confirmed that she will continue as an executive producer.

Since the novel has no sequel, the second season will center on an original story developed by Weisman and Hillian. The story will move from Los Angeles to Martha’s Vineyard; as Eleanor returns to her former life within the wealthy Black community, the secrets and scandals lurking in this seemingly peaceful setting will shake what she knows about her past.

Washington expressed her excitement about returning to the character, while Apple TV executive Matt Cherniss noted that following the strong first season, they are expanding the series’ world through Eleanor.

Why it matters

The renewal of a production designed as a limited series for a second season shows that digital platforms can alter their format plans based on viewer interest. The fact that the renewal came roughly five months after the first season ended also reveals that the series’ future remained uncertain for some time. Since the source novel has no sequel, the new season will proceed with an original story; this ties the series’ success going forward largely to the script that Annie Weisman and Justin Hillian will craft. The absence of any announcement on whether Elisabeth Moss will return as a cast member suggests that the first season’s balance, built on three female characters, could change and that the narrative’s weight will shift toward Eleanor. For viewers, the open question is whether this story — moving to Martha’s Vineyard and going beyond the book — can sustain the interest the first season captured.
