Uber has begun using Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with autonomous driving hardware on certain trips in London as part of its work with Wayve. The service is not yet completely driverless; under regulations in the United Kingdom, a human driver supervising the system is seated in the front seat. While the rollout covers customers using the UberX, Uber Comfort and Uber Electric options, Uber also sends users a notification before the trip, giving them the option to choose a standard vehicle. The license Uber obtained last month does not currently allow the vehicles to carry passengers completely driverlessly.
Why it matters
The rollout shows that autonomous driving technology is beginning to enter everyday transportation services directly, while also revealing that its scope of use is still defined by legal limits. For customers using UberX, Uber Comfort and Uber Electric, a new option is being added to the travel experience; however, the presence of a human driver at the wheel makes clear that the service does not mean completely driverless transportation. The pre-trip notification and standard vehicle option preserve the right of customers who do not want to use the technology to make their own choice. For this reason, the development concerns not only Uber users but also those following the safety and liability framework for autonomous vehicles. The key unresolved issue is under what conditions completely driverless trips, which the current license does not permit, will become possible.
